My Rose Painting “Rose Clair Renaissance” on a book cover

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Exciting news!

My painting Rose Clair Renaissance IV was used on the cover of a book by Patrick Ahern.

The book is a true story about St. Therese of Lisieux and Maurice Belliere, one of the two missionary priests who, a year and a half before her death, wrote to Therese's monastery asking for a nun who would pray for them especially.  She was designated to do it and from then a very beautiful friendship started. The book has aabout 314 pages. A lovely story.

Rose Clair Renaissance - white apricot Rose - Original watercolor painting by Doris Joa

Rose Clair Renaissance IV - 12"x16" (30x40 cm)
painted on 140 Lb hotpressed stretched watercolor canvas

In my previous post I posted some Steps of my newest Rose Painting. And I couldn't resist and wanted to finish it as I also wanted to see how it develops.

When I started the Rose painting I only wanted to add a few leaves there but then I decided to paint more and also some buds.

Here are a few step-by-step-photos. Click on the images to enlarge them.

I used the same colours as I mentioned in my previous post.

The apricot colour was achieved with at first doing a deep layer of Indian Yellow. I then added some Translucent orange and then I used a mix of Translucent Orange and Permanent Rose.

The leaves were created with Aureolin, Indian Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Green and Translucent Orange. My favorite green tube is empty,  so I needed to mix the green by myself.

Rose – Work in Progress

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Today I have started with a new Rose painting.

Yes, I know, the figurative painting isn't finished yet, but I couldn't resist.  :)

I have done some Step-by-Step-Photos, so you can easily follow this work in progress. At first you will see the Drawing and then you are getting an idea about how I build up my layers.

My colours in this painting are: Indian Yellow, Aureolin yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Translucent Orange, Permanent Rose, Phthalo Blue and Phthalo Green.

It is wonderful to see the Rose developing and I know the look will completely change when I start with the background. I will go with a dark background, which would make the Rose pop.

The painting has the size 12x16 inch on stretched watercolor canvas.

In my previous post I was asked by Krista, whether I am stretching the paper by myself or whether I am buying it pre-stretched. Here in Germany pre-stretched watercolor canvas are not available. So I was happy when Joyce Faulknor taught on her blog how she stretches her paper. I tried it and it is so easy to do. I have tried it with hotpressed and also coldpressed paper. It works perfect. You should try it.

Rose Bonita Renaissance - Original watercolor painting

Rose Golden Celebration - watercolor painting

Red Rose - watercolor painting

I am still working on my large figurative painting - I hope it will be finished in the next days. But I really needed a break from this and so I did some Rose paintings. The Red and Yellow Rose are small ones, 6x6 inch. The Orange Rose is in the size 6x16 inch. All three are done in watercolor and painted on stretched watercolor canvas.

I hope you like them.

A small Rose and a small pink Hybiscus in watercolor

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Today I have to share two paintings.

Pink Hybiscus, small flower watercolor painting 6x6 inch by Doris Joa

Pink Hybiscus, 6"x6" (15x15 cm),
watercolor
Price: $50 USD plus $10 shipping international

The first one is a Pink Hybiscus and the second one a small Rose painting, both painted in watercolor on 140 Lb coldpressed paper.

The Pink in the Hibiscus was created with Permanent Rose, Phthalo Blue and some Brillant Purple. For the warm areas I used Napthol Red from M. Graham, an absolutely beautiful colour.

The colours in the Rose are created with some Indian Yellow, Translucent Orange, a touch of Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson and Phthalo Blue.

I really like the cool background in this one, a nice contrast to the orange in the Rose.

rose-amelita-6x6

I have worked more on Roses in the past week and although I have posted them in my Rosesblog I have decided to show them also here on my mainblog.

The first one is the newest Rose painting. The colour is a bit difficult to describe. It is not really pink, not really orange, not really red, it is a mix of that, the name of  the Rose is Amelita Renaissance.

And the two white Roses are of the Rose "Weiße Weihnacht", translated to "White Christmas".

All three paintings are done on 600 g (300 Lb) coldpressed Arches Watercolor paper, unstretched, and I really had fun painting them. The painting of one of the white Roses will also be in the E-book.

On a side note: I just have upgraded this blog to a new version and so far as I can see all seems to work perfect. But if you have with something trouble, please leave a comment here or email me and I will try to fix it. Thank you.

Advice?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Some days ago I got a message from a beginning artist from Canada. He told me that he is learning watercolor and oil painting and wants to develop his skills to paint as an artist for his career. He was asking me if I could give him some advice.

The only advice I can give him is to paint, paint and paint.

There is no fast way to learn, but you will see: the artistic journey is wonderful.

Of course visiting classes is also a good help. But when this is not possible there is the wonderful Internet. There are so many wonderful forums like Wetcanvas.com or ArtandArtistry.com which are helpful for each artist, where you can show your work and where you will get often good help to your work, advice for art business, Infos about colours, mediums, techniques and so much more.  Books about painting are also very helpful. It is great to have a good library. On Amazon.com you will find many books about painting. Studying other artists work is also helpful.  Look at the old masters or other artists which work you admire. So many artists today are writing blogs and share their knowledge for free, show Demos, do Videos on Youtube, but you always have to paint, paint, paint.

Regarding blogs from artists: Just today I visited the blog of Carolyn (Carolyns Paint Blog) and found this wonderful thread where she told about her experience to paint a landscape together with Ron Guthrie. I very much enjoyed reading this thread and that she shared how they worked on a Landscape. Although I am no landscape painter but I always like to learn something new, which will always be helpful for my own work.

Ah ... my own work. I have here the next step of my figurative painting.

I have started with the tree. For the tree trunk I used the colours: Raw Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Winsor Blue (green shade), Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber and Sap Green.

You see there is only slow progress, but I am also working on a beautiful Rose painting on my Rosesblog.

Figurative work Progress and an Orange Challenge

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

In one of my previous posts I showed a picture of a figurative painting, on which I am currently working.

I have worked more on this, especially this time on the hair, to get a better suggestion how it will look. I must be careful to save all the whites, where the sun hits the hair.

In the hair I used the colours Raw Sienna, added Translucent Orange for the very warm area, I also added burnt sienna and phthalo blue (green shade). In the next layers I also will add some green and alizarin crimson and mixes of all the other colours. I simply try to use all the colours, which I also use in the rest of the painting. With this I am getting colourharmony in the painting, which is important.

Now to the Orange Challenge:

I belong to a very wonderful group of artists in UK, USA, Canada and Germany (me!). I am proud to belong to this group - we are only Ladies and we support each other. Some weeks ago we decided to do a Painting Challenge each month. The theme for October was "orange and botanical" and today on 15th October we had to show our work. And now what do you think, what I have painted??????

Yes, a Rose. It is a wonderful Rose painting and I am very pleased with this result.

You will realize that I have changed the Layout of my site. I hope you like it. Please let me know when you are missing any link or Info and/or when something is not working correctly. This would be much appreciated. For some reasons I was not happy with the other Layout and I think this will be much more perfect for me.
