Rose Clair Renaissance - white apricot Rose - Original watercolor painting by Doris Joa

Rose Clair Renaissance IV - 12"x16" (30x40 cm)
painted on 140 Lb hotpressed stretched watercolor canvas

In my previous post I posted some Steps of my newest Rose Painting. And I couldn't resist and wanted to finish it as I also wanted to see how it develops.

When I started the Rose painting I only wanted to add a few leaves there but then I decided to paint more and also some buds.

Here are a few step-by-step-photos. Click on the images to enlarge them.

I used the same colours as I mentioned in my previous post.

The apricot colour was achieved with at first doing a deep layer of Indian Yellow. I then added some Translucent orange and then I used a mix of Translucent Orange and Permanent Rose.

The leaves were created with Aureolin, Indian Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Green and Translucent Orange. My favorite green tube is empty,  so I needed to mix the green by myself.

Rose – Work in Progress

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Today I have started with a new Rose painting.

Yes, I know, the figurative painting isn't finished yet, but I couldn't resist.  :)

I have done some Step-by-Step-Photos, so you can easily follow this work in progress. At first you will see the Drawing and then you are getting an idea about how I build up my layers.

My colours in this painting are: Indian Yellow, Aureolin yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Translucent Orange, Permanent Rose, Phthalo Blue and Phthalo Green.

It is wonderful to see the Rose developing and I know the look will completely change when I start with the background. I will go with a dark background, which would make the Rose pop.

The painting has the size 12x16 inch on stretched watercolor canvas.

In my previous post I was asked by Krista, whether I am stretching the paper by myself or whether I am buying it pre-stretched. Here in Germany pre-stretched watercolor canvas are not available. So I was happy when Joyce Faulknor taught on her blog how she stretches her paper. I tried it and it is so easy to do. I have tried it with hotpressed and also coldpressed paper. It works perfect. You should try it.

Red Rose - watercolor painting

I am still working on my large figurative painting - I hope it will be finished in the next days. But I really needed a break from this and so I did some Rose paintings. The Red and Yellow Rose are small ones, 6x6 inch. The Orange Rose is in the size 6x16 inch. All three are done in watercolor and painted on stretched watercolor canvas.

I hope you like them.

Single Daffodil and my finished Rose painting in watercolor

rose-ghislaine-de-feligonde-iii

It is almost a week over since I posted an update of my roses. I photographed each day a new step and wanted to post it but then I was busy with going on with the painting and so I can already show the finished painting.

For now I will call this painting finished, but since I have spent so much time on it I also need a break and will check it in a few days again, if anything still needs some work.

It is painted on 140 Lb stretched watercolor canvas with only using transparent watercolors. Size is 12"x16".

Beside that I did a small Daffodil painting on 140 Lb coldpressed paper. Size is 5"x7".

Roses WIP and a better photo of the painted girl in watercolor

rose-ghislaine-wip-neu2

As I promised here is a new step of my current Roses painting.

I have started with some leaves to get a better feeling for the roses. The roses are looking so different on the white paper and to have them  surrounded with the leaves makes it easier to go on. And it is better to see how the colours work on them.

The colours on the leaves and stems were created with some indian yellow, aureolin, burnt sienna, sap green and helio turquoise. This is only the beginning. I may not forget to add also some of the roses colour (permanent rose and alizarin crimson mixed with phthalo blue) to the leaves.

I will show the next step very soon.

I am sorry,  the photo of the girl in watercolor which I posted yesterday was very bad, so here is also a better one.

I too have now a gadget in my right sidebar where you can join this site. This means you can become a friend/follower of this site and I hope you will join.

Portrait study of a beautiful girl

Monday, April 27th, 2009

ines

Today I have worked on this small portrait study. This girl is really beautiful and I wanted to capture this in my painting. It is only a small painting (around 8x10 inch) and painted with watercolors.

My colours were half opaque and half transparent and I think this works very well. In the black hair I used a mix of ivory black, burnt umber and winsor blue (green shade). For the warmer areas I added also some burnt sienna.

I plan to do a figurative painting of this young girl but wanted to get a feeling for her and for my palette, before I start.  This study was good practice for me.  When I was mostly finished I photographed the painting, loaded it in photoshop and made a black-white copy and compared it to a black-white copy of the ref.pic. This helped me enormously to see the values and where I was wrong in the face. I still need to work a bit on it then I will call it finished.

And now I must go on with my Roses and I hope to share tomorrow a new step of them.

One note: I have decided to close my Rosesblog. This doesn't mean that I will stop with painting Roses - oh no, how could I??? - but I will show all now here in this blog. This will help me to be more up to date with my postings and for my Readers it is the same.

For those who don't know my Rosesblog I want to show you one of my newest Rose paintings. It is a bit different than usual (especially in the background) and I really enjoyed working on it. It is painted on paper on stretcher bars, to read more about this Method please go to my Rosesblog by clicking here.

Some other News:

I have sent one of my Rose paintings to the Society of Botanical Artists in UK. And I am happy that it was selected for the Society of Botanical Artists Exhibition. This prestigious exhibition takes place at Westminster Central Hall, London from April 24th to May 3rd. I was not sure if this Rose painting would make it in, because it is no really botanical work. But I am happy that it is IN. Here is the painting:

By the way: This painting is one of the full Step-by-Step-Demonstrations in my E-book.

Some of my work was published in the Porch Magazine. The editors thought that my work would have the romantic feel for which they were looking for their Valentine's Issue.
I already have one copy of this Issue and I am very pleased with the quality of this Magazine and I am very thrilled that they are showing 6 of my paintings.

Three Roses

rose-amelita-6x6

I have worked more on Roses in the past week and although I have posted them in my Rosesblog I have decided to show them also here on my mainblog.

The first one is the newest Rose painting. The colour is a bit difficult to describe. It is not really pink, not really orange, not really red, it is a mix of that, the name of  the Rose is Amelita Renaissance.

And the two white Roses are of the Rose "Weiße Weihnacht", translated to "White Christmas".

weisse-weihnacht

weise-weihnacht-ii

All three paintings are done on 600 g (300 Lb) coldpressed Arches Watercolor paper, unstretched, and I really had fun painting them. The painting of one of the white Roses will also be in the E-book.

On a side note: I just have upgraded this blog to a new version and so far as I can see all seems to work perfect. But if you have with something trouble, please leave a comment here or email me and I will try to fix it. Thank you.
