This is one of my latest Rose Paintings. It is a portrait of the Rose “Sangerhauser Jubiläumsrose” which I planted some years ago in my garden. I like the warm yellow pink colour of this rose and especially I love to describe the colours with watercolors.

Some days ago I ordered some new colours from Ken Bromley Art Supplies in U.K. The order was despatched at the same day and the colours arrived here in my studio within a short time. Of course I always love to get new colours and to try them out, but I especially liked that there was an extra note in the package which told me that my parcel was packed with care by Tony and he added the words “Happy Painting!“. I really liked this and I think this is a great customer service. Usually when I get packages only a bill is added to my products. But to get an extra note makes the package really special and it makes the customer feel special.

I too add always extra handwritten notes in each of my packages. For me each customer is special and I want that my customers feel so.

I just enjoy to paint roses too much. Beside all other paintings a rose must be there, too! This Pink Rose is so beautiful! The pinks are created with Permanent Rose and Purple Magenta. The inner of the rose glows with yellow and orange and pink and I just love the ruffled petals.

~~~~~
Do you also love to read magazines? What is your favorite magazine? I love “Gartenträume” (Garden Dreams).
Before I discovered my art passion I was reading a lot of magazines. There was no day when I did not held any magazine in my hands.
Since I am painting I don’t find a lot of time for them. Besides my family I spend each free minute on my art and all things around my art.
But there is still one magazine which I love to read.
It is a german magazine called “Gartenträume” (translated: Gardendreams). Oh, it is a wonderful magazine, printed on high quality paper, which shows photos of gardens from around the world, beautiful close up photos of flowers and roses and gives a lot of inspiration for your own garden and home and so much more. It is a quaterly magazine, and the issues are for spring, summer, fall and winter.
“Gartenträume” is really my absolute favorite magazine.
I hope you too take time for reading a wonderful magazine, which brings you joy and inspiration.
Here is one of my newest Rose Paintings. It is a pink white Rose with a bud and some leaves painted in watercolor on stretched canvas. It means that you don’t need to put the painting behind glass. It can hang without a frame, since the edges are painted, but of course you can put it in a frame like an oil painting without glass. The painting is varnished, so you can hang it without any worries.
Size of the painting is 12×12 inch (30×30 cm), it is available for $210 plus $10 shipping.
Beside my new watercolor rose painting I would like to share some of my roses with you.
For my rose paintings it is very important for me to have a lot of reference photos. A lot of roses are growing in my garden but unfortunately not each rose has beautiful blooms every year. Often it rains too much and the rose is not able to show its full beauty.
© Doris Joa
from left to right:
first row: Rose Clair Renaissance; Rose Honoré de Balzac;
second row: David Austin Rose: Golden Celebration, Rose Ghita Renaissance
Last year I added the Rose Ghita Renaissance and the Rose Honoré de Balzac to my rose collection in my garden. Although I was waiting the whole summer to see the roses in full bloom and in its full beauty I was so disappointed to see that too much rain made it not happening. Grrr……….
But this year it seems that I have a bit more luck with them and I think I finally got some good referencephotos for future paintings.
I hope your roses and flowers are blooming spectacular in your garden!
I have finished three new Watercolor Rose Paintings. This are close ups of a red rose, a pink rose and a yellow rose. I love how they are bathed in sunshine.
The red rose is a very warm red rose. It is a portrait of the Rose Bonita Renaissance. The pink rose portrait is from the climbing rose New Dawn and unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the yellow rose. It only bloomed one year in my garden and then I saw this rose never again growing there.
Each painting is done on stretched watercolor paper – as I mentioned in previous posts it is like a stretched canvas, only the surface is watercolor paper. The edges are painted and no glass and no frame are needed, because the paintings will be varnished. But of course to have them framed together will make them looking spectacular. The size of each painting is 12″x12″ (30×30 cm).
Here is a photo of each Rose Portrait again:
And here is just another pink rose finished. David Austin’s Rose “Heritage” is painted on 600 g (340 Lb) Arches coldpressed watercolor paper. I really like this surface for some reason. Usually you don’t need to stretch this paper. But I stapled it to my board to be really sure.
Painting a white subject, like a white rose, other white flowers or a white dress is always challenging and makes the most FUN in watercolor.
But which colours are the best to describe maybe a white flower or a white dress? How to paint the colour white in watercolor or any medium? You can use cool colours to describe the shadows or warm colours. This depends on what you want to say.
I have painted already so many white flowers and roses so I can show you some excamples how I described the white subject in my paintings.
Usually a nice purple mix is a good shadow colour. A mix of a blue and a red works well. But what if we add some yellow or some orange or maybe a green colour to our shadows?
Here are some pictures of some recent paintings.
The real white in each of these watercolor paintings is the white of the paper.
When painting a white subject we only paint the shadows and the darker areas in the subject or the reflections from other surrounding subjects.
In the first picture, the Daisy painting, is a lot of white paper to see because the small petals are mostly all flat. Only the petals with the shadows got some colours. I used mainly a blue grey colour to paint the shadow.
In the second picture I also used blue and made some purple (mixing a red and blue) and I also used some yellow on the petals. But the painting looks really cool. It is a cool white rose with a lot of blue and blue-purple in this painting.
Now to the third picture. This rose is bathed in sunlight. These shadows do really sing the sun song, they are dancing on the petals. For these shadows I used a warm yellow, some orange, a mix of blue and red (favouring the colour red) and also some green. The shadows are all warm and so it makes the whole painting warm and completely different to the cool white rose. But I love the cool white rose the same as I like the warm rose.
And here are two photos where I can show excactly what happens when we change the cool shadows to warm shadows.
© Doris Joa
When painting my beautiful model I wanted to portrait elegance, grace and soft femininity. Unfortunately I painted the shadows too grey, there was too much blue added in the shadows. Although the skin tones, the hair and her pose looked great – the painting didn’t look so as I wanted to have it. I decided to change the colours on the dress. I simply painted over the greys using yellow, orange, red and purple and was amazed with the result. Also I warmed up the background colour. In this painting the warm colours are more appealing and they describe perfect what I wanted to say.
All of you who know my e-book or have seen my Free Watercolor Demonstrations know that I usually start always with the flower and then I am working on the leaves.
This time I worked a bit different. On my white paper I did an underwash of Aureolin Yellow and some pink colour, which also will be used on the rose. The pink colour is Ruby Red from Schmincke. I also added a bit of Sap Green as Underwash.
For this underwash I used my 2 inch Brush from Scharff Brush, Inc. Series No. 560 which is perfect for large washes.
When all was bonedry I then started to work on my leaves. In my previous post where I showed the complete rose painting I already told you which colours were used on the leaves.
Then I started finally with painting the rose, because at this time I was not completely sure how I want to complete the background. Should I paint more leaves or were it enough?
As the rose was developing I also knew how I wanted to have the background. So I added more of my underwash colours there.
And more colours were added to get more depth.
I also wanted to add a little bud in the left corner but it was bothering me so I washed over with darker colours this area.
The leaves also got more colours, some got more washes of the mix Aureolin and Sap Green.
You know already the finished painting, but here it is again:
Happy New Year to you all ! I hope you all had a great night and I am wishing you all the best for 2011.
I want to thank you all for support in 2010, for buying my paintings, prints and my e-book and of course for reading my blog. Your interest in my artwork means a lot to me. Thank you, thank you!
I am starting the New Year with a new rose painting in watercolor. It is a portrait of the Lions Rose, which grows in my own garden. This rose is mostly white with a soft pink touch. I wanted to do the background differently this time – not always ending in too much darks. I also wanted to portrait the leaves in different greens. Some green leaves were painted with a mix of Aureolin Yellow and Sap Green, warmer leaves were painted with an underwash of Aureolin Yellow and then adding the next layer a mix of Translucent Orange and Sap Green. In other leaves I added Phthalo Blue to the Sap Green to make the green a bit cooler. A very nice dark green gives the mix of Translucent Orange and Phthalo Green – I just love this mix. The whites are all the whites of the paper. I did not use any Masking Fluid.
I am sure I am having some photos of how the painting was developing. I will search for them and post them in my next post.
All my watercolor paints using in this rose painting are from Schmincke and all are transparent colours.
