In my previous post I mentioned that I was working on a pink Rose in oil. Today I finished this painting. It needed longer then I thought, because I really needed to get a feeling for the oil colours again. But with each brushstroke I was getting more confidence.

Pink Rose, medium: oil, size: 16×16 inch (40×40 cm)

Currently I am working on another Rose in oil. It is a creamy white Rose. The german name is Rose Elfe, which means in english: Rose Fairy.

Here is a photo of my working process.

As you can see I covered my white canvas with a lemon yellow underwash in acrylic. I chose acrylic because it dries very fast.

I am right handed and so I started in the left corner. I do not work in layers. It is totally different to my watercolors. I paint in a direct way using opaque and transparent colours. I apply my colours just where I see them and then blend them together. It also allows me to soften my edges immediately. But this doesn’t mean that I never have to go back to some areas. Often I see things later where I need to add another layer or to darken areas or to lighten then or to change the colours a bit. But it gives you a good suggestion about how I work with oils. I am using only Walnut oil and Walnut Alkyd Medium from M. Graham – no turpentine – nothing else.

It is a long time ago since I painted in oil. This is my newest painting and I really need some time to become familiar with the oils again. This purple tulip is painted on panel and size is 7,2 x 10 inch (18×24 cm). It is still not signed, but will do it as soon as the painting is dry. It is hard to get the right colours with the camera, but I think it is very close to the original.

I am working currently on a pink Rose in oil in size 16×16 inch (40×40 cm) and I needed to re- paint some areas a few times. It still isn’t finished and I hope I can show it very soon. There are two other beautiful roses planned and I hope they will turn out in these paintings what I am hoping for.

I have created a new colourful Horse painting, but this one is very different to the others. As you see it is a green horse with a deep purple background. I really had a hard time to do a good photo of this painting, maybe it was the yellow-green or the purple, which the camera didn’t like. But after a lot of tries I was able to get a good photo and with adjusting it a bit in Photoshop I was very pleased with the result.

But I also must add that the painting in real life looks absolutely stunning. Hope you like it too.

This painting is done in oil and I do not use any Turpentine in my oil work. I only use M. Graham Walnut oil and Walnut Alkyd Medium, a fast drying Medium. Both Mediums are super and I only can recommend them. I do not like to have Turpentine in my house, because my studio is beside our living room and I like to keep the doors open so that I am very close to my kids.

Today was a busy day. At first I wanted to start with a new Rose painting, but then I needed to do an update of my site, then I needed to do at first a backup (wich is very important) and after all doing this I decided to go swimming with my kids, about which they both were very happy. We really had a lot of fun and when we got home it was very late.
But I was able to start in the late evening with a new Rose painting – it will be a very elegant Rose – white with a hint of yellow and orange and pink and I hope to show it very soon on my Rosesblog.

Thanks for reading!

As I said it seems to be my Rose week.

I have painted to more. The first one is painted on Reeves Watercolour board and size is 6×9 inch.

The other one is painted on hotpressed Crescent Watercolour Board and size is 6×6 inch. I really can still not say which surface I prefer for my watercolors. A long time I was a fan of the hotpressed paper, but for some reasons I also like the coldpressed paper and the boards and also the Aquabord.

The third painting is a Glowing Hibiscus, also painted on Crescent Watercolour Board, size is 4×4 inch.

As I promised here is finally an update on my large rose commission.
The rose is named “Lions Rose” and is growing in my own garden.
Size of the painting is 24″x32″ (60×80 cm) and painted in oil on stretched canvas.
The painting is already delivered and the client loves it. This is always exciting, although I usually send photos about the progress and about the finished painting, it is always very exciting how the client reacts when seeing it in real life.

Closeup with dewdrops

About this painting:
As you have seen in one of my older posts I paint in a direct way on a white canvas. I have tried to work on a toned canvas, but I do not really like this and I do not see for me any difference in the result. Here is a step.

It is always astonishing how with adding the background the whole feeling of the painting changes. Since I work always with the same palette I make sure, that I do use the same colours on the flowers also in the background, it gives a wonderful harmony. I do not like to use too many colours in a painting, it confuses me. With knowing my colours I am able to mix the colours, which I need. I do not use any black in my colours, I mix my own darks and browns.

Today I was busy with working on my website. I really have to update it and I think it will be running with the changes on tomorrow. I am also trying to finish my shop there.

With doing this work I also have created a shop on greetingcarduniverse.com which allows you now to buy greetingcards with images of some of my paintings there. I only have upload 4 images yet, the painting Rhose Ghislaine de Féligonde, my rose painting “After the Rain”, my pink tulips “Frühlingsboten” and my Pink Amaryllis. I will upload more pictures there, so I am able to offer a nice collection there.
I have placed my Card Widget at the right sidebar, simply click on it to come to my card store.

Beside all this work I have not done very much progress on my Rose painting. But here is an update, how it looks now

I have worked more in the left right corner before I will go on with the roses, so I do not need to touch the roses, when they are still wet.
I hope to post tomorrow another update.

I do not often post photos of work in progress. But I thought I would be a good idea to post this rose here, because it also helps me to see things on the monitor which I do often not realize when I have the canvas in front of me.
This will be a Rose painting about the “Lions Rose”. It is a commission and I am doing it in oil and the size of the canvas is 24″x32″ (60×80 cm).

Here is a close-up.

In my previous flower paintings, the Rose Ghislaine de Féligonde and the White Lily I tried to paint on a toned green background. But I must say that I didn’t like to paint on a toned background and so I am doing this rose on the white canvas.
I try to use a limited palette to make things easier for me. On my palette are the following colours:
Naples Yellow instead of Indian Yellow, because I think the Naples Yellow will work a bit better, since the lady who commissioned me wants to have a creamy white and Indian Yellow is maybe a bit too strong.
There are also:
Aureolin, Translucent Orange, Alizarin Crimson, Permanent Rose, Phthalo Blue, Sap Green and Phthalo Green and of course Titanium White. This Lions Rose is creamy white with a touch of pink. There will be two large Roses, some buds, stems and leaves and also dewdrops.
I am pleased how the painting looks at this moment, but I will see better, when I have paint more. For mediums I am using only Walnut oil and Walnut Alkyd Medium, both are from M.Graham.
