More Art: WIP of a Rose painting in watercolor

After doing a lot of oils in the past time I finally got back to my other passion: watercolor.
One of my favourite subjects are flower paintings, here especially roses and I decided to do a Rosepainting in watercolor again. To do a flower painting or here now a rose-painting is always a lot of fun for me.

As you will maybe know: watercolor is the difficultest medium. Do you anything wrong, there is no chance, to correct it. You also do not paint with white, you use the white of the paper. To get luminous, rich colours you will always have to work in layers.
Watercolors are having a special wonderful look and it is great to work with them. But I have to add, that it is going very slowly.

Here you will see a WIP of my current rose-painting. It is not the whole painting, only a part, but there will be only one large rose, then some buds and leaves.
As you can see, I was able to get luminous colours and look to the shadow colours. They are not grey – the colours really sing.

It is only a WIP – there is still a lot to do. I still have to soften the edges on the mainrose and maybe here and there add a bit of depth.

I paint on hotpressed 140 Lb watercolor paper – it has a smooth surface and allows you to paint in layers and not to disturb the underlayers. I do not like the textured surface of coldpressed paper or on other rough paper.

I used the following colours here: indian yellow, alizarin crimson, phthalo blue, translucent orange, aureolin (all these colours are from Schmincke) and I used also from Winsor & Newton permanent rose and naples yellow. These were the colours for the mainrose.

I am working at this time on the leaves and I will show how it goes on.

Rose Ghislaine de Féligonde

Do you also love Roses? If you have already looked at my website you will know, I love them and especially I love to paint them. Each rose has its own character and it is more than interesting, how a rose changes the colours from the buds, to the full open bloom until the end of the bloom, when you only will see then the stamens, which also have lost their colour.

This Rose Ghislaine de Féligonde starts with a colourful bud and changes its colours from pink/yellow to white. In this painting I show only the open rose, two are just young, the third shows already the white, which means, the end of the bloom has begun.

Red Hollyhock

Last year, when we did a trip to the Castle “Burg Eltz” we drove through some small villages. And in one I discovered a corner with a lot of hollyhocks full in bloom.
Since I am not going without my camera out of the house I shot a lot of photos of them. This is a Red Hollyhock – I love the bold colour against the light background.
This Hollyhock is an oil-painting and available now on ebay.

My latest watercolor paintings

Here are some of my latest watercolor paintings.
This Rose is Rose Bonita Renaissance. All my roses, which I paint, are growing in my own garden. This gives me the opportunity to observe them very well and to get the best results when I am doing photos. I love to have sunlight in my paintings and when I see my roses growing you will find me every day in my garden and doing photos, photos, photos.
