About Doris Joa
Painting what light makes visible
I am a watercolour artist from Germany, drawn to flowers, figures and those fleeting moments when colour, light and emotion become inseparable.
I paint because looking closely changes everything. A white petal is suddenly filled with blue, violet, apricot and gold. A fading rose becomes more expressive with every fold. A raindrop, a shadow or a quiet gesture can turn an ordinary moment into something unforgettable.
My story
From a first brushstroke to a life in art
I began painting in 2002. What started as a hobby very quickly became one of the great passions of my life, and in the summer of 2003 I decided to become a professional artist.
Watercolour became my artistic home. Its transparency, its unpredictability and the way light travels through the layers continue to fascinate me. Oil painting remains an open journey alongside it – a place where I can work with more paint, visible brushstrokes and simplified forms, and allow myself to see familiar subjects differently.
Flowers & nature
Beauty becomes interesting when it has character
Roses and peonies have accompanied my work for many years, joined by hydrangeas, pansies, daisies, tulips and many other flowers. Some grow in my own garden, where I can watch them change through the seasons and return to them again and again.
I am not searching for botanical perfection. I am interested in personality: petals that curl, colours that shift, light that touches one edge and leaves another in shadow. I want a painting to preserve not only what a flower looked like, but what it felt like to stand in front of it.
“I want you to feel that you could reach into the painting – touch the velvet of a rose petal, sense the light and remember the feeling of standing in a garden.”
My way of painting
Romantic realism, built from observation
Look closely
Every painting begins with patient observation: colour temperature, edges, reflections and the small irregularities that give a subject life.
Let light remain
Transparent watercolour allows the white of the paper to shine through. I build depth gradually while protecting the luminosity that first drew me to the subject.
Paint the feeling
Realism matters to me, but emotion matters just as much. My aim is not a copy of nature, but a truthful, personal response to it.
Teaching & original art
From my studio to yours
Over the years, my original paintings have found homes in Germany, Austria, France, Spain, England, Australia and the USA. Knowing that a painting continues its life in another home is one of the most meaningful parts of being an artist.
I also share my process through detailed watercolour lessons and masterclasses. I teach the same way I paint: step by step, with close attention to transparent colour, light, edges and the decisions that bring a subject to life.
