Two Blooms, One Summer – Large Hydrangea Original Watercolor

For this painting, I held two hydrangea blossoms together until their many small petals formed one generous, abundant shape. I was immediately fascinated by the way the two blooms seemed to grow into each other and create an entirely new composition.

The shifting colours made the painting a joy to create. Fresh and muted greens meet dusty pink, mauve, violet and soft cream. Every small petal carries its own combination of colour, light and shadow, yet together they become one harmonious bloom.

What drew me most was this feeling of abundance without heaviness. The painting is full of detail and movement, but its transparent layers and pale background keep it fresh, luminous and quietly joyful.

Fresh green, dusty pink, mauve, violet, burgundy and almost-white petals create a richly layered but gentle colour world. Transparent washes allow the white of the paper to shine through, giving the large flower a luminous, airy presence.

The painting is sold unframed, so you can choose a frame that suits your home. For lasting protection, I recommend professional conservation framing behind UV-filtering glass or acrylic, using an acid-free mat and reversible, archival mounting.

A custom frame is the best choice for this 56 × 76 cm artwork. As a starting point, a mat border of approximately 10 cm at the top and sides, with a slightly deeper lower border of about 12 cm, will create a beautifully balanced presentation. Your framer can adjust these proportions to suit the final frame and your interior.

Watercolour paper can develop a gentle natural wave during the painting process. Before shipping, I carefully re-stretch this original so that it leaves my studio beautifully flat and arrives ready for professional framing.
