You can paint realistically and still play with lovely effects like this. Every paper reacts differently, so test it on your own paper first!

🇬🇧 Watercolor Tutorial – From flat to 3D? How to t 🇬🇧 Watercolor Tutorial – From flat to 3D?
How to turn a flat pencil sketch into a glowing little red rosebud – step by step.
Watercolor tips for depth & light:

Underwash for warmth: Aureolin
Base red: Naphthol Red
Deep shadows: Anthraquinoid Red
Where the light touches the bud and the color almost disappears: Dioxazine Violet for the brightest spot, blending into Ruby Red as it slowly turns back into red

Tip: First glaze the warm underwash and let it dry. Then lay in the shape with Naphthol Red, let it dry again and build up the depth layer by layer with Anthraquinoid Red. As a final step, for even more depth and the shadow between the sepals and the rosebud, mix Anthraquinoid Red + Phthalo Green – it gives you an almost black.

🌹 Watercolor Tutorial – How to Blend Flower Petals 🌹 Watercolor Tutorial – How to Blend Flower Petals into a Dark Background

Have you ever painted a flower that looked as though it had been cut out and placed onto the background?

This can happen when the edges are too hard and sharply defined.

Here’s how I soften selected edges in my watercolor rose painting:

🌸 Step 1 – Moisten the edges
Using a damp brush, I gently moisten the edges of the petal and the surrounding background.

🌸 Step 2 – Add another layer of background color
I apply another wash to the background, allowing some of the color to flow gently across the edge and onto the petal.

🌸 Step 3 – Control the paint with a paper towel
If the color spreads too far into the petal, I carefully lift some of the excess paint with a paper towel.

🌸 Step 4 – Let the colors connect
It’s perfectly fine if a little background color flows onto the petal. In fact, that’s what helps create a more natural connection between the flower and its surroundings.

The result? Softer transitions, greater depth, and petals that feel like part of the painting rather than separate shapes.

My rose painting is still in progress, and I’ll be working on the remaining petals in the same way.

🌺 Watercolor Tips – How to Paint Glowing Red Petal 🌺 Watercolor Tips – How to Paint Glowing Red Petals

How do you capture the beauty of light shining through delicate red petals?

Here are three watercolor tips from my Amaryllis painting to help you create depth, transparency, and luminosity.

🌸 Tip 1 – Preserve the Light
Leave the brightest areas of the petals almost untouched. The white of the paper helps create that beautiful translucent glow.

🌸 Tip 2 – Build Depth with Layers
Use transparent watercolor layers to gradually deepen the reds while keeping the colors luminous.

🌸 Tip 3 – Create Contrast
Place deeper reds next to lighter, glowing areas. This contrast makes the petals appear more delicate and three-dimensional.

Small details can make a beautiful difference in watercolor painting!

A little look behind the scenes of my watercolor sunflower. Layer by layer, the petals, tiny details and leaves slowly came to life.

I especially loved painting the intricate flower center and bringing out the warm yellows against the blue background.
